This is what a well-planned safari feels like

Every traveller’s story starts with a single moment. These are the real experiences of people who once stood exactly where you are now, imagining what an African safari might feel like. Their journeys became memories they will carry for a lifetime. Let their stories inspire you, and show you what is possible. Your own story could be next.

  • We watched two massive male lions in Botswana—brothers, both huge. One was guarding a carcass he’d stolen from a leopard, while the other had been sleeping nearby. Eventually, the second brother stood up and walked toward the carcass. The tension was immediate. The feeding lion growled, low and warning, but his brother kept approaching. Then, without hesitation, he charged. Both lions burst into a chase, rumbling and roaring so loudly it felt like the sound went straight through your chest. No one in the vehicle spoke. Outside of the roars, you could have heard a pin drop.

  • We were sitting in an open field when a herd of elephants passed by. The matriarch stayed back, watching the tracker in the front seat, looking clearly uneasy. She tore a small tree out of the ground and pushed through it, stopping about fifteen meters from us, shaking her head and trumpeting. The air fell silent. Then the guide slowly stood up and spoke softly to her: “It’s alright, my girl. We’re just here to take pictures of you. You’re beautiful. We’re not here to bother you.” His voice stayed steady. And amazingly, she listened. She looked at him... then at the tracker... then back at him, as if weighing his words. Finally, she shook her head, turned away, and walked off. The entire vehicle froze — we had just watched an elephant understand a conversation.

  • We were backpacking through Kruger and had set up our tents in a quiet riverbed for the night. The guides were sitting by the fire, the evening settling into that deep stillness the bush gets after dark. Suddenly, a pearl-spotted owlet called from somewhere above us. Our guide immediately lit up and whistled back. For a moment, everything went silent… and then dozens of owlets all around us answered at once. Their calls echoed through the riverbed, circling us in the dark. We just sat there, watching the guide’s face glow with excitement, surrounded by this incredible chorus. It felt surreal — like the whole night came alive just for us.

  • One evening in the Okavango Delta, we sat beside a small pan watching the last light fade. Everything was still except for a few frogs chirping to start the night. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a lone elephant bull slowly walked out of the mopane trees toward the water. He wasn’t in a rush. He didn’t seem bothered by us. He simply stood there drinking, with the sunset reflecting off the water around his feet. At one point, he lifted his head, looked directly at us, and let out a deep rumble you could feel in your chest. No threat — just presence. We all sat completely still, listening to him breathe in the evening twilight. It felt as if the whole Delta paused along with him.

  • We were in Hwange National Park when our guide suggested we delay the morning drive because the wild dogs often passed by the lodge every other day. So, we stayed for breakfast. Suddenly, one of the dogs sprinted past the back of the lodge, clearly hunting. Our guide shouted for us to get in the vehicle, and we dropped everything and ran. We followed the dog until it disappeared into the bushes, looped around, even found a pride of lions, and eventually returned for breakfast. Then, the guide shouted again — the whole pack was back. Adults and pups streamed behind the lodge toward the waterhole. We raced after them and arrived to find them drinking, faces still red from a recent kill. We sat there with them for ten minutes, watching the chaos settle into calm. Only after they bolted off again did we finally go back to finish our breakfast.

  • We were on a game drive in the Okavango Delta when a large male leopard stepped out of the bushes. We followed him for a while before a female appeared — the guide explained that they had been mating on and off. They disappeared into the thickets, and moments later, we came across a massive herd of buffalo, including bulls, cows, and calves. Then, out of nowhere, the leopards reappeared, stalking directly toward the herd. Rain began falling, thunder rolled in, and the buffalo couldn’t hear or smell a thing. The leopards crept closer… and closer… waiting for any sign of weakness. For more than two hours, we watched them attempt the impossible. Eventually, a bull sensed something, rallied the herd, and the calves were surrounded. The hunt never took place — but witnessing two leopards try to take on buffalo in a storm was absolutely incredible.
